China Bars 3 Indian Athletes from Arunachal Pradesh from Asian Games 2023, India Protests

1. Background:

Arunachal Pradesh has been a contentious region between India and China. Recently, China included Arunachal Pradesh in its official map as "South Tibet," a move strongly opposed by India.

2. Indian Protest:

India has lodged a formal protest against China's actions. They argue that China's actions violate the principles of the Asian Games, which prohibit discrimination against athletes from member states. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has also stated that India reserves the right to take measures to protect its interests.

3. Cancellation of Sports Minister's Trip:

As a sign of protest, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur canceled his trip to the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

4. Involvement of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA):

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is addressing this issue, and it has been discussed in meetings. The OCA is working with both governments to find a resolution.

5. Wushu Team's Situation:

The affected athletes are three women Wushu fighters from Arunachal Pradesh. The rest of the 10-member Indian Wushu squad and the coaching staff have already left for the Games.

6. Wushu (Kung Fu):

Wushu, which is also called kung fu, is a type of martial art that started in China.

7. Visa Issue:

The three athletes had received approval from the Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee to participate. However, they faced difficulties in downloading their accreditation cards, which serve as visas to enter China.

8. China's Response:

China has maintained its position that it welcomes athletes from all countries with proper legal documents. However, they do not recognize Arunachal Pradesh as part of India and consider it as "South Tibet."

Conclusion:

The barring of Indian athletes from Arunachal Pradesh from the Asian Games has escalated tensions between India and China. The issue is being discussed at both government and sporting organization levels, but a resolution remains uncertain at this time.
