Lizzo Receives Humanitarian Award at 2023 BMAC Gala Amidst Lawsuit Controversy

Lizzo was honored with the BMAC Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the 2023 Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) gala, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. This recognition came shortly after she faced a second lawsuit, alleging sexual and racial harassment.

Award Presentation:

The BMAC Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award was presented to Lizzo by the cast members of her Emmy-winning reality show, "Watch Out For the Big Grrrls." This presentation occurred just hours after she was named in a lawsuit by former employee Asha Daniels, accusing her of sexual and racial harassment, disability discrimination, and retaliatory termination. This lawsuit marked the second such legal action in two months, involving allegations of sexual and racial harassment.

Emotional Acceptance Speech:

Lizzo took the stage to accept the award, emotionally expressing her gratitude to BMAC. She emphasized the significance of humanitarianism and kindness as selfless acts. She acknowledged that anyone can be kind and help others, describing it as a gift.

Recognition of Unsung Heroes:

Lizzo praised individuals who dedicate their lives to service and highlighted that they often go unnoticed and unrewarded. She expressed her commitment to using her platform to shine a light on such unsung heroes.

Donations to Black-Led Organizations:

During her speech, Lizzo revealed that she had donated a quarter of a million dollars in June to various Black-led organizations focused on supporting Black youth, Black women, and the Black queer/Black trans communities.

Lizzo mentioned the names of the organizations she supported with her donations. These organizations include:

  • Marsha P. Johnson Institute
  • Black Girls Smile
  • Sphinx Organization
  • Save Our Sisters
  • She also partnered with the University of Houston to provide scholarships

Doing the Right Thing:

Lizzo emphasized the importance of doing the right thing even when nobody is watching. She pledged to continue amplifying the voices of marginalized people and creating safe spaces for Black fat women.

Response to Lawsuits:

Lizzo did not directly address the allegations from the lawsuits during her speech. However, she had previously responded to the first lawsuit, calling the allegations false and sensationalized.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings:

As of the time of this report, Lizzo had not publicly responded to the allegations in the latest lawsuit. Asha Daniels, the plaintiff in the lawsuit, is represented by attorney Ron Zambrano, who is also representing former dancers Ariana Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez in a separate lawsuit involving claims of sexual harassment and a hostile work environment.
